So just like that, my year with ASG & Partners has come to an end. And what a year it has been!
For the past 12 months, I have been working within the Media Department, alongside colleagues who became my role models, my mentors, and my second brain when I was unsure about the next steps. Taking on the role of Media Assistant, not only was I working in the Media Department but alongside the entire agency. A little daunting at first but an excellent baptism of fire!
I remember thinking on day one, that the year would seem like an age but honestly, it’s just gone by in a flash. My goal was to soak it all up, learn what I could and I know without a doubt I’ve done that. Here are a few of my placement take-aways….
This was a quickly learned lesson. ASG doesn’t function as the parts, it is absolutely the sum of the whole and being part of that is an experience I will always be grateful for. Being valued and treated as equal among the team really helped to build confidence and optimise each experience I had. I know it will serve me in any future position I take on. Working with the best in the business is something I feel very proud of.
Take away…..Talk to your colleagues, learn from them, let them learn from you. You’re stronger together, always stronger together.
It seems obvious but it’s worth reminding yourself that agency life like every part of life has its fair share of ups and downs. There will be curve balls, interruptions, losses, and defeats. Those will mix in with plenty of successes, achievements, and triumphs. They are all valuable and it’s important to learn from the bad as well as the good. My time at ASG has taught me always to look for a solution or a creative way to approach any problem. Never be afraid to ask for help – you’ll probably find someone who has faced the very same situation before.
Take away….. Celebrate your victories and learn from the losses, it’s all about perseverance and rolling with the punches.
If you’re undecided about taking a placement year or not, I would tell you to do it. Go in with an open mind and be ready to put in the work. Soak up all the knowledge and experience you can, you’ll be amazed at how ready you feel by the end to tackle your final year and life after University.
When I began my placement, I was timid and lacked confidence. I didn’t feel I truly knew the direction of my career. One year on and I can’t believe the change. I am confident in my capabilities. I trust the process, and I know that I still have a lot of learning to do.
A huge and sincere thank you to my colleagues at ASG & Partners and all those from other organisations I met along my placement journey. I appreciate the time you have invested in me, the questions you have answered, the issues you have helped me to overcome, and the successes you have celebrated with me. I’ve been surrounded by a team of experts and in particular some inspiring women (ASG’s women are at the top of their game 🙌💪). I’ve learned a huge amount and now it’s back to the books as I finish off my time at Ulster University.
“ats us nai so it is.”
